Game Idea

Game Idea:

Nina is living with her boyfriend in a small apartment in the middle of a busy town with their dog “Dug”. Nina has an argument with her boyfriend when he asks about her past life. The boyfriend eventually storms off to go outside and is hit by a car. Nina rushes outside to follow him and finds her boyfriend lying dead on the street. As she approaches him, she finds a note lying beside him.

It says: “If you want him, back... you'd better come and visit me. I miss you xox” Nina immediately knows where her boyfriend is.

-Cuts to gameplay-

Nina walking along the street of the city with Dug. -Dialogue between Nina and Dug-
Dug: You know where he is?

Nina (annoyed): Yes!

Dug: May I ask where?

The player sees a massive gate in the middle of the street.

-Gate opens-

Dug: Don't tell me...

Nina: Let's visit the Death...

-Nina and Dug walk through gate and enter the Underworld-

The player has to get keys to get to the next part of the level

At the end of the game, Nina finds the Death Reaper who has the boyfriend held hostage. We find out that Nina and Death used to have a thing way back when she used to do drugs (really depressed, - punk-looking) and she overdoses and meets death. Nina tells Death that what they had is a long time ago and that she now is at a happy place and that he should be happy for her. The player has to fight against the Death Reaper and at the end he apologizes and realizes that he should let her go. She and the boyfriend get back together and become closer.

Nina Backstory:

Nina was an orphan and was adopted by a family that just wanted the child support from the government. She is neglected by the family and becomes a rebel. In School she hangs out with the “stoners” and becomes addicted. She eventually moves out of home and quits school to go to the “big city” where she finds a small crappy apartment and starts working at a convenient store. She goes out at night, and finds friends who get her to do drugs again. One night she overdoses and meets Death. She doesn't want to die and puts up a fight, Death likes her strong-will and lets her live. They continue to meet through near-death experiences, and she eventually tells death that she wants to be with him. Death and Nina start a relationship and she seems happier than she was before. Eventually she notices one very young ghost by herself. Nina talks to her and finds out that the ghost died before it could really start doing living and traveling the world. Nina realizes all the things she has missed out on and tells death she wants to live again. Death is reluctant but Nina convinces him that she will visit him. He brings her back to the living and she decides to pick things up. She starts doing sport and going places. She eventually sees Death less and meets a boy through biking. They both start dating and living together.  

I recently watched "Crazy Ex Girlfriend" where the story is stereotypical and cliche but the characters are so diverse and the story has twists which break the cliches we know which I thought was very interesting. I wanted to do a similar thing with my Story, using a story we already know but making it different by having diverse characters and different themes.
